Englewood is an unincorporated area straddling two counties (Charlotte and Sarasota), and is literally surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico. The area was founded in 1884 by two brothers who established vast lemon groves. One-acre “city lots” were platted and recorded to create a downtown section which was surrounded by ten-acre “grove lots” designed for future permanent residents. In later years, a prosperous lumber industry also flourished. The greatest attraction was, and still is, its appeal as a growing residential area with long stretches of white sand beaches.
Englewood – Cape Haze offers four pristine beaches on the tranquil crystal clear green/blue Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, there are two State Parks and miles of fishing, kayaking and canoeing along Lemon Bay. There is also a plethora of professional golf courses in the area, as well as tennis and unlimited water sports.
Englewood draws a variety of nationally acclaimed artists, from painters to sculptors to writers, and our downtown area is a place where people often gather for festivals, live entertainment, parades, art exhibits, a farmer’s market, and so much more.
